Carrie-Anne Moss will also be returning to her role as Trinity.

Lana Wachowski will co-write and direct the sequel.

Since we know you're just as excited as us about this news, here's everything we know so far about The Matrix 4. With Neo seemingly dead, it'll be interesting to see how Reeves will be reintroduced to the franchise, but with overwhelmingly positive reactions to the news of Matrix 4 on social media, we're sure to find out more details very soon.

In the fourth film of the series, the canadian actor Keanu Reeves returns to the role of Neo.

On Aug. 20, 2019, more than 20 years after the first Matrix movie was released, Variety broke the news that a fourth film in the thought-to-be trilogy will soon begin production. The news comes after John Wick: Chapter 3 director, Chad Stahelski set rumours swirling earlier this year by suggesting that the Wachowski sisters were working on a new instalment in the franchise.

Lana Wachowski says in a statement that the ideas of "The Matrix" are more relevant than ever now and she's happy to have the characters back in her life.

Moreover, Warner Bros Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will be producing the movie.

In 1999's The Matrix, Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus recruited Keanu Reeves' Neo to join the human uprising against their robot enslavers in a groundbreaking sci-fi spectacular.

The original films followed a band of rebels who battled intelligent machines in a future where humans are enslaved within the Matrix - a virtual reality that resembles the contemporary world. The last film, The Matrix Revolutions, came out in 2003 and was met with poor reception from critics and the general audience alike. "Matrix 4" does not yet have a release date.
