According to the NAB officials, Maryam had excused herself from appearing before the accountability bureau on Thursday and had gone to meet Nawaz in the jail.

An accountability court in Lahore on Friday granted the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) physical remand of PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz and her cousin Yousuf Abbas until August 21.

Responding to the allegations of the opposition leader that the PTI-led government had ordered Maryam's arrest to divert attention from the ongoing Kashmir conflict, the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs noted that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had invited Indian Prime Minister to attend the wedding of his granddaughter in Pakistan.

Dr. Adnan Ahmed, the personal doctor of Nawaz Sharif told reporters that Maryam was arrested in front of her father during their meeting in the jail. PML-N member of the Punjab Assembly Uzma Bokhari fell unconscious because of the fracas.

In a brief statement the NAB, an anti-corruption watchdog, said that Ms Sharif was detained in connection with a corruption investigation involving a sugar mill owned by the Sharif family.

"In 2008 there were 11mn shares under Maryam Nawaz's name". "She (Maryam) had been appearing before the NAB regularly".

She urged the government to take collective measures, taking on board the opposition and other political parties in view of the current prevailing circumstances.

Lawyers also clashed with police.

Ms Sharif has led several large political rallies in recent weeks and is a vocal critic of Prime Minster Imran Khan and Pakistan's powerful military. The statement was regarding "dubious" business transactions of the Chaudhry Sugar Mills of which she was one of the major shareholders. "Chauhdry Sugar Mills is now being associated with Maryam Nawaz and Yousaf Abbas".

At the news of her arrest, a lot of people seemed to be celebrating the news of Maryam Nawaz's arrest.

However, she was taken into custody as soon as she came out of the jail after meeting her father, who is serving a 7-year term after being found guilty in a corruption case by an anti-accountability court in December last.
