South Africa clinched their first major global trophy for 10 years as Handre Pollard fired them to 46-13 win over Argentina in the Rugby Championship here on Saturday.

Australia finished second followed by the All Blacks.

The lead continued to change hands as Nicolas Sanchez and Pollard traded penalties but the latter then touched down to give South Africa a 24-13 lead at the interval.

South Africa lost scrumhalf Faf de Klerk to the sin bin for repeated offsides during this spell but Pollard scored another try while his side were a man short before Mapimpi earned the bonus point and Kolbe secured it. A life long Manchester United and South Africa sports fan, he has been in love with sport since his first kick of a ball and tries to be a part of any sport in any way he can!

Duane Vermeulen will captain the team from the No.8 position, with former Sevens player Kwagga Smith retaining his place on the flank.

For much of the opening half it seemed the Springboks might squander their huge volume of possession, just as they did in the 16-16 draw with New Zealand in their previous match.

"We played the best teams in the southern hemisphere so it is good to have this one step up, although a lot of work still needs to be done before the World Cup".

Pollard stretched the lead with a fifth penalty before Argentina enjoyed their longest spell of possession and control without managing to breach the Springbok line as a deserved second try went begging.

"This Test is a good opportunity for Bongi and Trevor to start next to the "Beast", who has a wealth of experience from playing more than 100 Tests", said coach Rassie Erasmus. "Fitting in the players from overseas was a bigger challenge than we expected".

This year's tournament was abridged to three matches per team because of the World Cup in Japan starting on September 20.

"But if there is pressure it is good pressure and the Argentina side is quite a physical side and link up well between forwards and backs, so it will be an exciting game for us to be involved in", he said.
