Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta insists Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount will live up to their potential after stinging criticism from Jose Mourinho following their 4-0 thrashing at Manchester United.

Manchester United enjoyed a dream start to their 2019-20 campaign by claiming a thumping 4-0 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.

He suggested Chelsea needed more experience and that his former player Lampard could have started with N'Golo Kante, who came on as a substitute, and Willian even if they were not fully fit.

Chelsea had the lion's share of possession and more shots at goal but were ultimately left reeling from their heaviest loss to United at Old Trafford since 1965. They are fighting in every training session.

Head coach Lampard said: "We were clearly the better team for 45 to maybe 60 minutes".

'Obviously everyone would like to start in a better way but we have to face the reality and become stronger from it'.

Lampard was courageous in his team selection at Old Trafford after starting with the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Kurt Zouma.

But they collapsed in the second half, making it a miserable first Premier League game in the dug-out for Chelsea legend Lampard.

Things don't get much easier for the new man in charge either, with Liverpool up next in the Super Cup.

"We took risks but that's the way here, you've got to go for it".

"What's clear is the squad we've got".

"We can't run away from the fact that we know where we're at - we couldn't bring in players".

"We know that we can improve. There is a trophy to fight for on Wednesday against a good team - so we have to be ready for it".
