Although Chadwick made a good start, she would see herself slipping down the order as both Alice Powell and Emma Kimiläinen made their way past her. Beitske Visser was her closest challenger in the title fight but could only finish third in the final race and ended the season ten points adrift of the first-ever W Series champion.

'I found myself having a bit of wheel-banging, ' said Chadwick. The six points that Hawkins scored were enough to lift her from 14th in the championship to joint 11th with America's Sabre Cook (USA), who finished ninth today, thereby earning both drivers positions in the all-important top 12 for the season, which guarantees them both participation in the championship again next year.

The 21-year-old takes a 13-point lead into Sunday's Brands Hatch finale but her ambitions stretch far beyond claiming the inaugural title of the women-only eventJamie Chadwick is, at 21, quick, compelling to watch and no stranger to winning.

Ladies and gentlemen, Jamie Chadwick is your 2019 W Series champion.

"I'm under no illusions as to how tough it's going to get", she said after clinching the crown with fourth place in the season's final race.

The W Series, which uses identical 1.8 litre Formula Three cars, aims to help female racers climb the male-dominated motorsport ladder towards Formula One, which last saw a woman start a race in 1976.

"To have the championship crown today is pretty incredible".

"I suspected that W Series had the potential to be something big, but I never expected it to be this big.

It'll sink in soon I'm sure, but it hasn't yet", said Chadwick on the official W Series website.

"I've never felt attention from the spectators as much as I did today, and that really is a credit to W Series".

W Series Chief Executive Catherine Bond Muir has promised extra European rounds for 2020, with the series looking to expand further across the globe in the following years.

"I think we've done that now and next year has got to be all about the drivers and telling the drivers' stories and introducing the personalities and characters".
