They later added: "According to unofficial information, doctors managed to bring life functions back to Bjorg Lambrecht (Lotto-Soudal), but his condition didn't allow for transportation by helicopter".

The intense rain during the third stage of the Tour of Poland caused the roads to become wet and slippery, creating the unsafe conditions that led to Lambrecht's untimely death.

The statement read: 'There are no words to describe this tragedy.

"My deepest condolences to family, friends and team".

In 2017 he won the U23 Liege-Bastogne-Liege cycle, and was also second in other races in the same category such as the Tour de l'Avenir, the Tour de Savoie Mont-Blanc and the Giro della Valle d'Aosta.

Many have been sharing tributes to the young rider on social media including Britain's Mark Cavendish, Alex Dowsett and Peter Kennaugh. To the family, friends and teammates of Bjorg, all our thoughts and sympathies are with you.

The news comes just weeks after British Tour de France victor Chris Froome was seriously injured in a 40mph crash.
