Ashleigh Barty of Australia (R) shakes hands with Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian Federation after losing in straight sets.

Victor of the US Open in 2004 and the French Open in 2009, the 34-year-old has struggled with injuries throughout her career but has now defeated eighth seeded Sloane Stephens, Czech third seed Karolina Pliskova and now Barty in successive matches.

Osaka said she "felt it wasn't safe" to continue against Kenin ahead of the U.S. Open starting Monday week. Djokovic had to problem with his right elbow, which tightened on Friday night. After a timeout to have it examined and wrapped, she played a few more points before retiring. "Hopefully all will be fine for tomorrow". She beat Maria Sakkari 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 with an encouraging all-around effort.

"I'm not really an analyzing person, but somehow, like, on my intuition, I'm doing so much better, not repeating so many of my mistakes". However, Kuznetsova did beat Keys in a 2017 exhibition tiebreak in 22 points, just incase you want to factor that into your handicapping somehow.

"I went out there, I wanted to finish the set".

Kuznetsova will play for the title on Sunday against the victor of a later semi-final between Americans Sofia Kenin and Madison Keys.

Svetlana Kuznetsova upset top seed Ashleigh Barty 6-2 6-4 to reach the Western and Southern Open final in Cincinnati.

"Still not quite there, but we're getting better and better each match", Barty said.

Serving for the match at 5-4 in the second set, Pliskova was broken.

"This was a week that I battled through", Barty said.

Barty said a potential return to number one wouldn't be her focus this weekend. She also withdrew from Cincinnati before her first match, but stuck around to cheer sister Venus until her loss in the quarterfinals. "I'm not thinking of the ranking at all".

Ashleigh Barty's chance to move back to No. 1 was only one victory away.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, France's Richard Gasquet earned his first Masters 1000 quarter-final victory in six years, defeating Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 6-2. "If I can win matches, the ranking will take care of itself".

Medvedev reached the final at Montreal last week and lost to Rafael Nadal. Kuznetsova has split her last 10 final appearances overall and is 14-14 in final appearances on hard court.

"It's insane for me to reach my first semi-final at this age", added Gasquet, who at 33 finally made it to the Cincy semis in his 13th appearance.
