They were largely successful. PPB is aware of only six minor injuries that took place during the course of the protest.

Saturday's demonstration is attracting members of the Proud Boys, a fraternal organization that espouses some white supremacist ideology, as well as some OR and Washington militia members, and other groups - such as an IN group called The American Guard, whose president has been involved IN neo-Nazi groups.

Masked members of the local Rose City Antifa, billed as "the nation's oldest active anti-fascist group" and known for its use of violent tactics in street confrontations, say they will battle them.

"Portland is being watched very carefully. Hopefully the Mayor will be able to properly do his job".

He also wrote that "major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an 'ORGANIZATION of TERROR'".

"Go look at President Trump's Twitter", Biggs, a former InfoWars staffer, told The Oregonian newspaper.

"They want you to not show up in Portland, they want to put fear in your hearts", Gibson said.

Chief Danielle Outlaw speaks to reporters at an evening press conference. Police have mobilized to prevent clashes between conservative groups and counter-protesters who converged on the city.

"When a government pushes back like that, we don't bend the knee", Gibson said as he walked to the jail. "But when we have people like Joe Biggs say that they're going to come here every single month until we do whatever it is they think we should be doing. well, I want to give this some context".

More than two dozen local, state and federal law enforcement agencies are in the liberal city for the late Saturday morning rally.

The AP, the New York Post, and other publications have reported that the right wing demonstration on Saturday is organized by the "Proud Boys", and will also include skinhead group the American Guard, "militia" groups the Three Percenters and the Oathkeepers, and even the neo-Nazi Daily Stormers. Portland police said all the city's 1,000 officers would be on duty for the gathering, which had been publicized on social media and elsewhere for weeks.

Not all who gathered Saturday were with right-wing groups or Antifa. Police used officers on bikes and in riot gear to keep black-clad, mask-wearing anti-fascist protesters from following them.

Police Lt. Tina Jones said Saturday afternoon that hundreds of demonstrators have gathered in and around downtown for hours.

Among those attending the demonstration was Patriot Prayer's Joey Gibson, who organized similar rallies in 2017 and 2018 that erupted in clashes.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a major civil rights organization, has classified the Proud Boys as a hate group.

Police continue to investigate several incidents from clashes on May 1 and June 29 and are politically neutral, Jones said.

Police said they seized the weapons as the protesters assembled along the Willamette River that runs through the city.
