Tottenham look to hijack Arsenal's deal for William Saliba

Arsenal are still in the market for a centre-back despite sealing a deal to bring William Saliba to north London, according to reports.

The claims from RMC are backed up by the highly respected David Ornstein, with the BBC journalist confirming Spurs "interest" via his twitter account.

The Saint-Etienne defender has been heavily linked with a move to fierce rivals Arsenal in recent days, however, it would seem Spurs are prepared to try and steal him from under their noses.

The 18-year-old has agreed a five-year deal with the Gunners and the two clubs were only minor details away from finalising the move.

Spurs, on the other hand, have reportedly offered to pay the majority of the transfer fee upright with the option to loan the defender back for a season.

However, yesterday, Tottenham Hotspur made a proposal of €30m plus bonuses to St Étienne, which goes above and beyond their valuation of the player, in a deal that would also see Saliba return on loan to Les Verts for the next 12 months.

However, as reported by RMC Sport, Tottenham are now ahead of Arsenal in the battle to sign the France Under-20 global.

Meanwhile, the Gunners are now in turmoil with skipper Laurent Koscielny about to cop a fine for refusing to go on their pre-season tour.

Spurs may well be preparing for life without Toby Alderweireld.

He wants to be allowed to leave the club on a free despite having one year left on his contract, with Rennes pushing hardest to sign him.
