He said Al-Amin didn't do anything threatening but that the youth had been listening to rap music in his auto in the parking lot, according to the statement.

I want Elijah el-Amin's picture everywhere. "You know right from wrong".

According to AZ Central, Al-Amin was listening to rap music while parked in his auto at a convenience store parking lot in Peoria, Arizona.

Adams told police rap music makes him feel "unsafe" because of an incident he had with someone who listened to the music in the past.

Even though Adams said he only felt threatened by the music and not by Elijah, he still made a decision to be "proactive rather than reactive", police records state.

Michael Adams, 27, was charged with the first-degree murder of Elijah after allegedly slitting the teen's throat in a Peoria, Ariz., Circle K store at around 1:45am on Thursday.

According to a probable cause statement filed by a Peoria Police detective, a witness at the Circle K convenience store said that Adams walked up behind Al-Amin as he stood by a soda machine, grabbed him by the neck and stabbed him without provocation. Cops found Adams near the store soon afterward, and he allegedly admitted he was involved in the crime.

According to court documents obtained by AZ Central, Adams told police that Elijah did not provoke the attack, and that he killed the teen because he was listening to rap music and he wanted to be "proactive rather than reactive".

- James Andre Jefferson Jr. Court records show he's been arrested for attacking someone with a deadly weapon twice - both strangers. he also assaulted a correctional officer while in jail.

Bill Lamoreaux, a spokesman with the Arizona Department of Correction, however, had written in a statement that Adams "was not designated seriously ill" and was given contacts to give him care, housing and welfare, according to the Arizona Republic.

Numerous people commenting on Twitter said that claims about Adams' mental illness should not be used to explain away what they believe was a hate crime.

"He talked about rap music all the time". I don't care what mental issues you have. These people are white supremacists and terrorists.

"The fact that someone is trying to claim that that's the reason why my brother's life was taken is just an excuse and it doesn't help, it doesn't lend any type of consolement, it doesn't help at all", she said, according to the station. People questioned this mental illness defense, saying this line of defense would be accepted very differently if the suspect and victim's race was switched, according to Newsweek. These parents lost their little boy!

"This case is still under investigation and prosecutors are committed to pursuing the appropriate charges in this case to secure justice for the victim and his family", the Maricopa County Attorney's Office said in announcing the charges against Michael Paul Adams. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in court July 15.
