"I know what a player he is and I think he can be an incredible player and he has improvement to make and I want to work with him to do it, but for that he needs to stay longer at the club".

"I will be looking at their attitude, the way they play and train, in pre-season and onwards".

The 41-year-old manager returns to Stamford Bridge having made his name there as a player with 648 appearances and 211 goals to his name.

"I have seen Callum come through and he is a fantastic talent", Lampard said.

Maurizio Sarri may have spent last season moving between the anger of his own supporters and the defiance/misunderstandings from his players but he still ended it with a Europa League and a top four place. I don't think at 18 you should get too anxious, I can say that now I am 41 and I can look back and say it was probably good for me to see that because it drove me on.

"I know that - and genuinely feel that".

"On the pitch it was clear from when I first arrived at the club that the age of the team needed to be looked at".

"I am honoured and privileged to have managed a club with great tradition and I grew up very aware of Derby County". I can't hide away from that.

"I'm a realist. I understand what's wanted from me and I will try to deliver".

On whether he'd asked for time or patience, Lampard added: "The last thing I want to do is ask for any favours going in".

Lampard might have little choice but to use Hudson-Odoi as Eden Hazard has left for Real Madrid in the summer and he is unable to sign a replacement.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek signed a new five-year contract recently, and it is believed Hudson-Odoi could be handed a similar long-term deal, which Lampard is keen to seen come to fruition.

"It's not one to dwell on".

"He revelled in it and went on to become Chelsea's greatest ever player".

Lampard gets his managerial career at Chelsea underway with a tough Premier League opener away at Manchester United on August 11 before facing Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool in the Super Cup on August 14.
