Huge blast rocks gas plant in China, 'many injured': state media

Ltd., located in the city of Yima, exploded at around 5:45 p.m. Friday, according to the government of Sanmenxia City, which administers Yima.

The official Xinhua news agency said the explosion occurred in the state-owned Henan Coal Gas facility's air separation unit.

Local media showed amateur videos of a massive column of black smoke billowing from the factory and debris littering the roads.

'Many windows and doors within a three-kilometre radius were shattered, and some interior doors were also blown out by the blast, ' CCTV said on its Twitter-like Weibo social media account.

More than 270 rescuers are searching for the missing people, said the ministry.

The injured were rushed to hospital for treatment.

China experiences frequent industrial accidents despite orders from the central government to improve safety at factories, power plants and mines. The incident has so far claimed the life of 10 people while 19 others are seriously injured, the state-run CCTV reported.

More than 60 people died in March in a chemical plant explosion in eastern Jiangsu province.

Hundreds of people were injured in the powerful explosion that blew out windows of nearby residential buildings.
