The Little Mermaid reportedly goes into production next year.

Speaking at Florida Supercon over the weekend, Jodi opened up about her thoughts about the casting decision. But the singer's real-life personality (contrasted against that of her older sister Chloe) seems much more aligned with the wide-eyed, inquisitive mermaid than the college-aged character she portrays on Grown-ish. "We can see a part of ourselves in this and it feels inspirational". "Danish mermaids can be black because Danish *people* can be black", Freeform's post continued. "She lives in an underwater kingdom in global waters and can legit swim wherever she wants."For the sake of the online arguments from a certain segment of Little Mermaid fans, the post followed the assumption that Ariel is actually Danish". What you bring to the table in a character as far as their heart, and their spirit, is what really counts, ' Benson added. A black "Ariel" has been cast; you know someone is going to be upset about that.' Then they find three tweets out of 9 trillion, and they're able to write a story about it. From now on, white actresses can play every Black Disney princess, and Black actresses can play ever white Disney Princess.

"Fine. I call that, and I'll raise you". But let me ask you this: why can't a mermaid be black? In an Instagram post, Freeform had strong words for the #NotMyAriel types and made it clear that there's no reason the upcoming live-action remake's titular mermaid has to "look like the cartoon one". "In fact, the entire thing is fiction!"

Meanwhile, Benson isn't the only one who has spoken out about the online criticism over Bailey's casting.

Crews has now put himself forward to play King Triton, Ariel's father, by sharing an edited picture in which his top half has been Photoshopped onto a still of the underwater ruler.

And of course, Halle Berry responded when some people confused her with the young actress, Bailey.

Despite some fans negative reaction, the Chloe x Halle singer's casting has been praised by a host of stars including Chrissy Teigen, Willow Smith, Gigi Hadid, Teyana Taylor, Miguel and Normani.
