The teaser opens with a frantic Tubman running away from her slave owner and opting to jump into the water instead of being put in his custody, stating, "I'mma be free or die", before descending into the water.

Directed by Kasi Lemmons, the film follows the unforgettable true story of Harriet Tubman as she escaped from slavery and became one of history's greatest freedom fighters.

The first trailer for the upcoming biopic "Harriet" was released Tuesday, starring Cynthia Erivo as Tubman. (Red Tails, Murder on the Orient Express), Joe Alwyn (Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, The Favourite), Clarke Peters (The Wire and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), and Jennifer Nettles (Underground) joining her on the cast. She also campaigned for women's suffrage.

Erivo is certainly honing her rising star. The film centers on her escape from slavery, her leading others to freedom on the Underground Railroad, and her efforts in the Civil War. "This is gonna be with me for the rest of my life".

The harrowing clips ends on a cliffhanger as Tubman instructs abolitionists to lift up their rifles and point them toward the slave owners. Set for a November release, we'll imagine Focus Features will bring this one to the fall festival circuit.
