The Blackhawks have traded one forward for another.

The Ottawa Senators acquired center Artem Anisimov from the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday for left wing Zack Smith. Smith is also two seasons removed from his prime, totalling 28 points last season after reaching the 25-goal mark in 2015-16 season.

Smith has spent his entire career with Ottawa since the Senators took him in the third round in the 2008 draft, tallying 94 goals and 99 assists in 612 games.

Anisimov and Smith and both signed through the 2020-21 season with their contracts carrying an average annual value of $4.55 million and $3.25 million, respectively. He has two seasons remaining on a four-year contract he signed with Ottawa on January 23, 2017.

Anisimov accumulated 77 goals, 78 assists, and a 49.6% Corsi-for in 291 games over four seasons for the Blackhawks.

The trade should work out for both parties involved, with Smith being given a fresh start with the Blackhawks and the Senators acquiring a forward that could help contribute goals during their crucial rebuilding phase.

"Artem is a big, competitive centre with excellent hands and playmaking ability", said general manager Pierre Dorion. "We really like how he will fit with the makeup of our team".

A veteran of 11 National Hockey League seasons, Anisimov has 163 goals and 184 assists in 703 career regular season games.
