Edu Gaspar has returned to Arsenal to become the club's new technical director.

The 41-year-old, who made 127 appearances for the Gunners over five seasons between 2000 and 2005, will be responsible for player scouting and squad recruitment.

Edu will leave his role as general coordinator for the Brazilian Football Confederation after the team won the Copa America on home soil.

Arsenal had been keen on appointing a new technical director for a while. I'm looking forward to helping make a difference", the club's official website quoted Edu as saying.Raul Sanllehi, head of football at Arsenal, said he is excited over Edu's appointment and called him a "true Arsenal man"."We're very excited that Edu is joining the team.

Arsenal needs defenders and if they are going to splash out £18 Million you have to think it would be better spent than on a forward that has hardly set the world alight.

Talks over the deal progressed significantly over the weekend - with both clubs now thrashing out the final details of the transfer, which will be Arsenal's second of the summer window following the arrival of Brazilian teenager Gabriel Martinelli.

Saliba, who is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in French football, has been a long-term target for Arsenal.

Arsenal legend Edu was a key member of the squad under Ardene Wenger and he has been named the technical director.

"He will be working closely with Unai Emery and the first-team coaches and will play a relevant role leading our football vision and ensuring we have - and follow - a solid philosophy through all our football activities". "During his time with the Gunners, he helped them win two Premier League titles - including as part of the 'Invincibles" team in 2003-04 - and the FA Cup twice.
