Apple announces updated MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro

The newest MacBook Air now ships with a True Tone display - just like its more expensive siblings. College students will get an additional $100 off, bringing the price to $999, the company said Tuesday.

The updated MacBook Air features True Tone Display that automatically adjusts the color temperature of the display for a more comfortable viewing experience. There's finally a quad-core, 8th-generation Intel chip inside (either a 1.4GHz Core i5 or an optional 1.7GHz Core i7), and all models now have both the Touch Bar and Touch ID - there's no longer a legacy keyboard for those who insist on dedicated function keys.

Both the updated MacBook Air and the 13-inch MacBook Pro will be made available for consumers to purchase via Apple Authorised Resellers from July 25. The "MacBook Escape" is also getting updated to full-on "MacBook No-Escape" with Touch Bar, Touch ID, and 8th gen Intel Coffee Lake processors, all for the same $1299.

While there's no denying that the 12-inch MacBook desperately needed an update, especially after Apple released the Retina MacBook Air a year ago, we don't quite feel the same way about the last-gen MacBook Air.

College students can save some money on MacBooks. The cheaper version has 128GB of storage, while the other has 256GB of storage.

The bigger update comes to the MacBook Pro line, which sees the death of the Touch Bar-less MacBook Pros and the introduction of two new, updated 13-inch MacBook Pros with TouchBar.

The entry-level model, which starts at $1,299 or $1,199 for college students, now packs a Touch Bar, Touch ID, and a T2 security chip.

Apple is also kicking off its latest Back to School promotion today.

The 2018 13-inch Touch Bar MacBook Pro is significantly more powerful and comes with four Thunderbolt 3 ports, but that power won't really be necessary for most users.

In terms of hardware, the updated MacBook Air is identical to the current model that was announced in October previous year.

With Apple adding Touch Bar to the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro at the same price, there are no non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro models in the lineup anymore.

Apple's back-to-school promotion, which starts today, also includes Beats Studio 3 Wireless headphones with the purchase of qualifying Mac notebooks and iMacs.
