Amazon Developing Lord of the Rings Online Multiplayer Game

The collaboration agreement has Amazon Game Studios and Leyou jointly developing the game, with Amazon Game Studios marketing and publishing the title globally with the exception of China, where Leyou will handle. As of right now, there is no release date or information about which consoles the game will eventually release on.

It's incredibly exciting to see how the Tolkien universe is being expanded in both the Amazon series and now this new MMO, even though we're a bit bummed that the game won't have a stronger tie to the new series.

While Amazon is a relative newcomer to MMO development, Layou have a bit more experience under their belt since they own Digital Extreme, the developers of Warframe. At least until today, the video game comes back to life leaving news and revealing that Amazon Game Studios will also take the development of the work.

The MMO is set in a similar era to the Amazon TV show; however, the two projects are unrelated. Amazon is collaborating with Leyou Technologies and Middle-earth Enterprises on the project.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings MMORPG will a free-to-play adventure set in Middle-earth as "portrayed in The Lord of the Rings literary trilogy".

Last September Athlon Games announced it was working on a free The Lord of the Rings MMO.

Amazon Game Studios is now making a massive multiplayer Lord of the Rings video game.

"We believe our combined resources and expertise will result in a lovely and compelling game that customers will love and play for years to come", Leyou CEO Alex Xu said in a statement. The massive and immersive game is said to take players beyond what J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about in the original trilogy. This MMO will not be the first one set in the Lord of the Rings universe, as The Lord of the Rings Online has been kicking around since 2007.

Hot off the heels of the news that Amazon is making a Lord of the Rings TV show. We also do not know when the Lord of the Rings MMO will be released nor which platforms it will eventually arrive on.
