Warriors' Kevin Durant's injury blows up Celtics' Kyrie Irving's free agency plan

"According to multiple league sources, Irving still has not removed the Celtics from consideration as he contemplates where to sign as a free agent, though the assumption around the National Basketball Association was he was looking to go elsewhere to join up with another marquee free agent".

UPDATE (Wednesday, 11:57 a.m.): Kyrie Irving made it official, deciding he will not opt into his $21.3 million contract with the Boston Celtics for next season, making the guard a free agent. That will make him an unrestricted free agent once free agency opens on June 30. He has put up strong individual numbers with the Celtics, averaging 23.8 points, 6.9 assists and 5.0 rebounds this past season.

Originally selected first overall in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Cavaliers, Irving is a six-time all-star and captured the 2016 NBA Championship.

A week ago, Celtics president Danny Ainge addressed the media about Boston's looming summer. It looked as though the Celtics could be the team to upset the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals, but that prediction turned out to be a huge farce as the Celtics could barely play as a team.

Although he won't be eligible to sign a designated veteran contract given that he was traded more recently than his fourth year in the league, Irving could still get considerably more money from the Celtics than anywhere else.

"I don't know, I mean, there's not much I can say about that, honestly. We'll just have to wait and see what happens there", Ainge said.

"I have not received that indication, no", Ainge said.
