But she won only three of 13 break points and world number 13 Bencic reached the final of the grass court event with a 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 win. It wasn't the prettiest performance from Bencic, but she buckled down after dropping the first set and saved all five of her break points down the stretch.

"This means a lot to me", Bencic said. Bencic looks to win her second title of the year and the fourth title of her career.

American youngster Sofia Kenin, who stunned Serena Williams at the French Open earlier this month, continued her strong form by beating Anastasija Sevastova on Saturday to reach the final in Mallorca.

Kenin won the next four games, to take a 4-3 lead, but then was broken herself as Bencic edged a see-sawing opener.

Kenin dug deep, though, holding her nerve to eventually break serve. After eight good holds on both sides in set number two, Belinda moved ahead with what could have been a pivotal break in game nine, serving for the title in game ten and creating three match points.

After Sunday's final, the focus turns to the Nature Valley International tournament in Eastbourne before Kerber defends her Wimbledon title when the championships begin on 1 July.

It wasn't to be for her, though, wasting them all and allowing Kenin to break back and steal the thunder, taking the tie break 7-5 to survive and send the match into a decider.
