Jony Ive to leave Apple and form his own design company

Ive will continue to work with Apple on "exclusive projects", CEO Tim Cook stressed in the release, also highlighting the "brilliant and passionate design team he has built" over three decades with the company. He has also voiced design videos and helped to redesign software, dramatically overhauling iOS and MacOS to bring them better in line with the company's streamlined, minimalist aesthetic. "This just seems like a natural and gentle time to make this change".

Ive will still work with the company. "After so many years working closely together, I'm happy that our relationship continues to evolve and I look forward to working with Jony long into the future".

But Ive's departure highlights Apple's move to de-emphasize its hardware - with the global smartphone market largely saturated and increasingly competitive - and focus on music, streaming television, digital payments and other services and subscriptions.

The late Steve Jobs is credited with turning around Apple's fortunes when he returned to the company in 1997, but arguably it was his decision to appoint Ive as senior vice president of product design the same year that drove the remarkable story of Apple's transformation from struggling also-ran to tech goliath.

"Jony is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple's revival can not be overstated", Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

"While this is a bit if a shocker to Apple and its investors we are not overly concerned as Ive will continue to work closely with Cook & Co".

"The team will certainly thrive under the excellent leadership of Evans, Alan, and Jeff, who have been among my closest collaborators".

"The design team at Apple has remained consistent, and I don't worry that all of a sudden Apple's design is going to decline significantly".

Post this announcement by Ive and Tim Cook, Apple's shares plummeted by 1.5% to $197.44, representing a $9 billion drop in the company's value.

Exactly what the new firm will be working on is not clear.

LoveFrom will borrow from Apple's current roster, bringing designer Marc Newson, who joined Apple in 2014, along with him, according to the Financial Times. I wouldn't be surprised if Williams is being groomed to take over as CEO someday.
