Iran says US cyber attacks fail, hints at possible talks

Tehran is yet to react to the reports, Iran's Fars news agency said yesterday.

Trump said the sanctions are a "strong and proportionate response to Iran's increasingly provocative actions".

It added that it was "still not clear whether the attacks were effective or not" and suggested the United States media reports were a "bluff meant to affect public opinion and regain lost reputation for the White House" following the downing of its drone.

Tensions have mounted in recent days following the downing of an unmanned US surveillance drone by Iranian forces.

Citing two former intelligence officials, Yahoo News reported Friday that U.S. Cyber Command launched retaliatory digital strikes against Iran.

The officials claimed that the systems controlling missile launchers were disabled following the attacks.

"They try hard but have not carried out a successful attack", an Iranian minister tweeted on Monday.

Netanyahu accused Iran of being a destabilising force in the region well before the events of recent weeks. "Previous year we neutralized 33 million attacks with the (national) firewall", Jahromi noted.

In a joint statement on Monday, the United States, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Britain expressed concern over Middle East tensions and the dangers posed by Iranian "destabilizing activity" to peace and security in Yemen and the region. "But it's now clear that the #B_Team is not concerned with U.S. interests - they despise diplomacy, and thirst for war".

"The president, I think doesn't want us to go to war".

Trump "is 100% right that the U.S. military has no business in the Persian Gulf".

Pompeo met with Saudi Arabia's King Salman and had lunch with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman before proceeding to the United Arab Emirates for talks with Abu Dhabi's crown prince.

"Further economic sanctions are nearly entirely symbolic, rather than being economically significant", said Elizabeth Rosenberg, a sanctions expert at the Center for a New American Security.

The U.S. has repeatedly imposed sanctions on Tehran since past year, . when the Trump administration withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal that was sealed under the previous Obama administration.

Zanganeh did not provide different figures, adding that it was not in the country's best interest to do it.

Pompeo said they also discussed the need to promote maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, following attacks on oil tankers in Persian Gulf waters which Washington has blamed on Iran. Iran shot down the drone, saying it was in its air space, which Washington disputes. He said the latest sanctions will also target the inner circle of Ayatollah Khamenei.

Since the levying of sanctions by the United States, Iran has used tactics such as switching off transponders that would allow its oil exports to be quantified and tracked, making the estimates of its oil exports just that-estimates.

Lawmakers on both sides are praising Trump's restraint.

Iran has also shown a willingness to conduct destructive campaigns.

"If they want something beyond the JCPOA, they should offer something beyond the JCPOA; with global guarantees".

Trump tweeted today that the "US request for Iran is very simple - No Nuclear Weapons and No Further Sponsoring of Terror!" Despite this, he has repeatedly said he's open to negotiations with Iran's leaders.
