German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared unsteady and was seen shaking for the second time in just over a week at a ceremony in Berlin on Thursday.

Speculation about Angela Merkel's health issues initially began circulating after she was seen trembling at a welcome ceremony for Ukraine's newly-minted president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in Berlin last week.

Merkel, 64, appeared to clutch her arms together to keep herself still as she attended an event with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday.

Reports in Germany say she has been seen shaking before, especially under the sun.

Later on Thursday, she flies to Japan for the G20 meeting before heading to Brussels for an European Union summit on Sunday at which she will play a key role in trying to seal a deal on the distribution of the bloc's top jobs for the next five years.

"All is going ahead as planned". "The chancellor is doing fine".

When Merkel came into office in 2005, George W. Bush was USA president, Jacques Chirac was in the Elysee Palace in Paris and Tony Blair was British prime minister. It is not publicly known if Merkel has any health problems.

Her previous bout of shaking last Tuesday had been blamed on dehydration on a hot summer's day.

Hot weather in Germany has continued this week, though outdoor temperatures in Berlin dropped significantly overnight after peaking at around 37 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.

Mrs Merkel also faces tough negotiations on Sunday when she and other EU leaders meet to find a candidate for the powerful post of EU Commission president, a replacement for Jean-Claude Juncker.
