There was no getting away from it.

But the names of the four players who had made it to this sunny Saturday were perhaps not the NextGen names anticipated, nor the 30-somethings who have been here before. Simon went into the semis here for just the second time in his career.

In the first semi-final, Daniil Medvedev will fly the Russian flag after making short work of Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, 6-2, 6-2 in his last-eight tie.

"He has the whole package to play big". He won it in 2017, and was the runner-up here in 2014.

A Major doubles champion, he had been winding down his singles competition as he took on the role of Tournament Director at his home Masters in Madrid. The Spaniard won not one, not two but three matches en route to both singles and the doubles finals.

He will face another unseeded player in 34-year-old Gilles Simon of France in the final. I don't really feel like associating with a person like that'. And right on cue, Simon drew a couple of errors, and broke to level the match, 6-4.

The 37-year-old Feliciano Lopez had received a wild card at Queen's and he has used it with both hands so far, beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 16 minutes.

"He's the most hard opponent I've ever faced, and I think it's going to take a couple of tries to beat him", Stefanos Tsitsipas said. "It's very hard because he has one of the best returns on the tour".

"It was tough until the end with long rallies".

"Beyond that, if I wasn't a tennis player - for example, if we knew each other at school or whatever - he's not someone I would be friends with or hang out with".

'I think he's a good tennis player, but I could never be friends or close to a person like that, ' he said in an interview with Tennis Life Media.

Auger-Aliassime skipped last year's ATP grass season to play in Challenger Tour events on clay. But what of the match that boasted with the largest age differential in a semi or a final since 1977? Lopez was on court over four hours during the day. Lopez was able to grind out a victory over a top-20 player despite dropping the first set, and he gives himself a shot moving forward if he continues to get that many free points with his serve. He served it out, 6-3, this time with the teenager falling to the court.

His match against Kyrgios included the standard bratty behaviour from the Australian bad boy but his younger rival kept his cool to win 6-7 7-6 7-5. "It's insane how we old guys can still perform well", Lopez said. It's pretty wonderful, I feel very lucky to still be competitive at this stage of my career.

"I'm so happy, I can't believe I'm in the final here again". He told the crowd: "Keep your seats, I'm coming back in 10 minutes!" Murray and Lopez were leading 6-4, 4-5 when play was suspended on Friday. Yet still he did not leave court: They simply waited for Henri Kontinen and John Peers to join them.
