According to TMZ, family sources and neighbours have claimed Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr had suffered a heart attack while at home near Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In the popular song "Cleanin' Out My Closet", Eminem raps about his father abandoning him as a child, his turbulent affair with his ex-wife Kim, and his irreparably damaged relationship with his mother Debbie.

TMZ reports that Eminem often wrote letters to his dad as a child, but they would come back "return to sender". I never knew him.

Eminem has not responded to the news of his father's passing, but considering the nearly non-existent relationship the pair have had, this should come as no surprise. While Eminem has reportedly repaired his relationship with his mother - whom he also criticized heavily early in his career - no such reconciliation has ever been reported between Eminem and Mathers Jr.

But the couple split up shortly after and Eminem settled in Detroit with his mum, the entertainment site reports. "No, I don't, on second thought, I just f.in" wished he would die.

"I desperately want to meet my son and tell him that I love him", he told the Mirror. Bruce published a letter in a newspaper in 2001 explaining his side of the story. I work hard, I have money.

The rapper admitted his father would sometimes call while he was at family members houses', but he never got the chance to speak to him on the phone.

"I don't know anything about my dad and I don't care", the paper reported the singer as saying.

Eminem's grudge against his father has made its way into his music over the years.

"You won't remember me, though I held you in my arms when you were a baby", the letter read.
