According to Nintendo, the Super Mario Maker 2 Direct will begin Wednesday, May 15 at 6 p.m. EDT. The game officially launches on Jun. 28 with a staggering amount of customization options for budding creators. Story mode will be joined by a huge list of other changes detailed by Nintendo over its 15-minute broadcast. Here, Mario is charged with helping rebuild Princess Peach's castle, but to do so, he'll need to amass coins by accepting "jobs" from a bulletin board. But, rebuilding costs money. As you progress, there appears to be new characters you will interact with and they will offer you jobs - side quests - of a sort. The sequel includes new vertical sub-areas, an on/off switch, slope creation, big coins, mushroom trampolines, the Koopa Troopa Car, twisters, parachutes and a new moon mode. The nighttime themes all have odd effects, such as floating Goombas, sandstorms, and transformed items.

Players will have multiple styles to choose for their games, including ones themed after Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros, and Super Mario Bros 3. Players can also set clear conditions for their courses, and they can create them co-cooperatively using a single Nintendo Switch console. However, the host player will need to have a persistent internet connection for this.

But the most interesting aspect of the moon for makers will be the fact that it transforms the courses you create based on their theme. Course World is where players can share their levels, download courses to play offline and leave comments on other people's creations. They can browse popular courses, new courses, or search using specific tags. Everyone in Course World gets a Maker Profile, including a customizable avatar with unlockable accessories. Players who complete certain objectives can earn cosmetics for their Mii's like shirts and hats.

But the biggest development is a new mode known as Network Play. Ultimate and Splatoon 2, nail-biting levels from Super Mario Maker 2 will be put to the test.
