"Some days are grumpier than others", Grumpy Cat's publicist said in a statement on Friday, sharing news that the internet's favorite meme star has died. Within 48 hours, her image had been viewed more than a million times.

There was an outpouring of sadness at the kitty's death on social media.

The cat's real name was Tardar Sauce and the owners were never sure what her breed was.

Owner Tabatha Bundesen founded Grumpy Cat Limited and the cat made numerous appearances, including commercials.

Grumpy Cat's visage was named the Meme of the Year at the 2013 Webby Awards, beating out "Gangnam Style" and "Harlem Shake". Grumpy Cat Limited sued the owners of the USA coffee company Grenade for exceeding an agreement over the cat's image. It allowed her to quit her job as a waitress at Red Lobster within days of her cat's internet debut, U.S. media reported.

In addition to Grumpy Cat blowing up on social media - she had almost 2.5 million followers on Instagram at the time of her death - she also made many media appearances throughout her life and was an official spokesperson for Friskies.

On the cat's website, her owners maintain that Grumpy Cat wasn't grumpy at all.

Grumpy Cat, whose permanent scowl was the result of an underbite and feline dwarfism, was an online sensation.

Grumpy Cat has sadly died.

However, according to her owners, she only looked grumpy and acted like a regular cat, ninety-nine percent of the time.

"Her spirit will continue to live on through her fans everywhere", her family wrote.
