Barr provided no details about what "spying" may have taken place but appeared to be alluding to a surveillance warrant the FBI obtained on a former Trump associate, Carter Page, and the FBI's use of an informant while the bureau was investigating former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

Amid a broad effort to discredit Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the FBI, Trump and his allies have accused law enforcement officials of spying on his campaign and called for an investigation into the origins of the Mueller probe, which started at the FBI in mid-2016.

Durham's inquiry, which will focus on whether the government's methods to collect intelligence relating to the Trump campaign were lawful and appropriate, is separate from an investigation by the Justice Department's inspector general.

Last week, FBI Director Wray said he had personally seen no evidence of improper surveillance and that he was cooperating with Barr to "get to the bottom of an understanding of what the circumstances surrounding the initiation of that investigation were at the department and the FBI back in 2016". "I think it's great".

Attorney General William Barr named veteran Connecticut US Attorney John Durham to probe the Russian Federation investigation.

"Most of the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents we know do great work for our country, but there were some who were politically motivated and carrying out their job not in what was best for the country, but in what was best to pursue their own political agenda and there is absolutely no place for that within the Federal Bureau of Investigation", he continued.

He had 18 people that didn't like Donald Trump that were Hillary Clinton fans.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper is shrugging off the news that William Barr is taking the first steps to conduct an investigation on the origins for the 2016 Russian probe.

Durham, nominated as U.S. Attorney by Trump in late 2017 and confirmed in 2018, has prior experience as a special prosecutor.

"The Director is protecting the same gang that tried to overthrow the President through an illegal coup", Fitton was quoted as saying in Trump's tweet, which referenced an interview he did with Lou Dobbs of the Fox Business Network the previous week.
