You also need to spend at least $35 in order to qualify for the service, and there will be a cut off time each day as you'd expect.

Customers can shop from more than 2-hundred thousand popular items on Walmart dot com, ranging from diapers and laundry detergent to toys and electronics.

Lore says it will be cheaper for the company to do next-day delivery versus two-day service because eligible items will come from a single fulfillment center located closest to the customer.

Las Vegas and an unspecified area in Southern California will be first up for the service, which begins in "the coming days", according to Lore. It expects the new sales strategy to reach approximately 75 percent of the US population this year, which includes 40 of the top 50 major USA metro areas, said the statement. Walmart is on track to offer Grocery Pickup from 3,100 stores and same-day Grocery Delivery from 1,600 stores by the end of the year, which would cover approximately 80 percent and 50 percent of the US population, respectively.

Retail giant Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) said Tuesday it will be able to offer 75 percent of the US population a one-day delivery option by the end of the year.

Marc Lore, head of Walmart's e-commerce arm, said in a blog post that next day shipping would be available without a membership fee for orders over $35. This will enable Walmart to ship items in one box, or as few as possible, for a shorter distance via less expensive ground shipping. The retail already will also offer same-day delivery on groceries from 1,600 stores by year-end.

The company also created a grocery pickup and delivery service that is expected to provide pickup in 3,100 stores and delivery from 1,600 stores by the end of the year, covering 80 and 50 percent of the US population, respectively. "That's in contrast to online orders that come in multiple boxes from multiple locations, which can be quite costly".

Walmart claims NextDay deliveries actually cost the company less to fulfill.

Walmart has been working to increase shipping efficiency for some time, including repurposing 12 Sam's Club locations that closed past year into local e-commerce fulfillment centers.

Walmart only launched its two-day shipping service in January 2017.
