The Guardian reports today that following their defeat to Aston Villa in Tuesday evening's playoff semi-final, West Brom are eyeing up the former Ireland worldwide as the permanent successor to Darren Moore.

West Brom was without suspended star striker Dwight Gayle but got a goal from Craig Dawson in the 29th minute to draw level.

Villa lost in the play-off final to Fulham a year ago and the manager Dean Smith said it was a case of practice makes flawless when it came to the spot-kicks.

The Championship playoff final will take place on Sunday, May 26.

Tammy Abraham, on loan from Chelsea, scored the decisive spot kick to send Villa into a Wembley final against either Derby County or Leeds United with a lucrative spot in the Premier League up for grabs. "All of us are very hungry".

West Brom started with one change in Jacob Murphy to Villa's two in Conor Hourihane and Andre Green. Their second leg is on Wednesday (Thursday NZ time), with Leeds protecting a 1-0 lead at their Elland Road home.

The hosts held out manfully during extra-time, but Villa goalkeeper Jed Steer saved West Brom's first two penalties of the shootout from Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi.

Jedinak came on with just seconds remaining and slotted the team's second spot kick as the Villans seek a return to the Premier League after an absence of three years.
