The many Caps fans in attendance responded to the milestone - the eighth time Ovechkin has scored at least 50 goals in a season - by chanting "Ovie", "Ovie".

With a four-goal lead on Edmonton's Leon Draisatl for the Rocket Richard Trophy as the league's leading goal scorer, Ovechkin is attempting to top the NHL in that category for the eighth time in his career - which would be an NHL record. Ovechkin added a power play goal at 16:15, his 247th career power play goal to tie Luc Robitaille for fourth on the all-time list.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Ovechkin is only the third player to score 50 goals in a season at age 33-or-older: Jaromir Jagr scored 54 at age 33 in 2005-06 and Johnny Bucyk scored 51 at age 35 in 1970-71.

J.T. Miller had a goal and an assist, Tyler Johnson and Nikita Kucherov a goal each, and Mikhail Sergachev two assists for the Lightning, who played their home finale and lost for the first time in five games in their arena.

Only Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy, each with nine, have more 50-goal seasons.

Nicklas Backstrom and T.J.

Tonight's matchup marks the end of its regular season games at home. Washington is second in the Eastern Conference shooting 11.1 percent and averaging 3.4 goals on 30.4 shots per game.

"The last few games we have been giving up too much", said Cooper, whose team lost the services of defenseman Victor Hedman over the final two periods due to what the team referred to as an upper-body injury.

"I think it goes under the radar a little bit how many games he's played", Washington right wing Tom Wilson said.

Johnson converted a breakaway 3:36 into third before Ovechkin put the game out of reach with his 50th and 51st.
