Samantha Bee calls out Democrats for throwing Ilhan Omar under the bus

Minnesota's Jewish community is increasingly frustrated with the comments coming from Omar, saying they have actively reached out to the congresswoman to express their concerns.

The practice of "primary challenge", when a party challenges its own incumbent office holder, is highly unusual in United States politics and is largely discouraged, as it harms party unity and increases the chances of losing a seat to an opposing party.

Bee also pointed out that Omar is just one of a group of freshman representatives that are not satisfied with the status quo and have brought to the forefront a number of hard and long-overdue conversations, including that of Israel and Palestine, and she encouraged Democrats to take control of that conversation. "There's definitely talk about people wanting someone to run against her", said Democratic state Sen.

Her comments struck many, including some of her Democratic colleagues, as anti-Semitic tropes, including that suggestion that Jews might have dual allegiances, to their home country and Israel or some other entity.

Bee attempted to defend Omar by noting that she did apologize when enough pressure was put upon her, which was immediately undone by the fact that Omar later spoke about how the Israel lobby forces Jews to have "dual loyalty".

National Conference on Jewish Affairs (NCJA) spokesman Rabbi Aryeh Spero led the sit-in in Pelosi's office.

"Our community is exasperated by Rep. Omar's unfulfilled promises to listen and learn from Jewish constituents while seemingly simultaneously finding another opportunity to make an anti-Semitic remark and insult our community", added the executive director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota.

Sanders has come to Omar's defense amid the criticism, and suggested that a resolution condemning hateful speech that passed the House last week was meant to target Omar as a way of "stifling that debate" over support for Palestine and legitimate criticism of Israel. But Hunegs said Omar didn't care.
