Fans on Twitter were in awe with the all-round performance of the Argentine worldwide.

The only goal of Barça's five he wasn't directly involved in was Philippe Coutinho's, which was assisted by Luis Suarez.

But Coutinho was on target for Barcelona, the Brazil star scoring just past the half-hour mark on Wednesday after Lionel Messi's opener.

Suarez added: "We were great in the first half".

It certainly would have been.

While Messi produced another brilliant performance, the five-time Ballon d'Or victor praised Ronaldo's display 24 hours earlier.

Messi's Barca could potentially face Ronaldo's Juve in the last eight if the two sides are paired together in Friday's draw for the next round, but the Argentine would not be drawn on who they would prefer to face in the quarterfinals.

In fact, it was so complete that he even managed to impress defensively.

Lucas Tousart's effort pulled Lyon back into the tie briefly and Messi, who scored Barca's third and then created goals for Gerard Pique and Ousmane Dembele, admitted the Catalans nearly let things get away from them.

That might be a step too far, admittedly, but Messi once again showed that he can do pretty much anything on a football pitch.

Barcelona is seeking its sixth ever UEFA Champions League title and first since the 2014-15 campaign.

"So, we expect him to get more confidence in order to give us his best. We knew the rival would push a bit more in the second half and after their goal there were five or 10 minutes when the grew a bit more, so it was important to kill the game off at 3-1 and relax".

Ronaldo's treble against Atletico extended his record as the Champions League's all-time top scorer with 124 strikes in 160 games.
