Huawei Mate X: a closer look at MWC 2019

The feel of the Huawei Mate X has a nice, sturdy, solid feel to it with a nice snap when folding it.

What is remarkable about the Mate X's design is just how thin Huawei has managed to make it: The unfolded parts of the phone come in at a mere 5.4mm which is thinner than nearly any other phone today, and also much thinner than what Samsung was able to achieve in the Galaxy Fold. For the first time ever, sales of smartphones fell past year, probably at least partly because they aren't improving enough to persuade people to ditch their existing handsets.

"The fullscreen display on the wide side of the phone when folded acts as a 6.6" unit with a resolution of 2480 x 1148. At €2,299 (about £2000 and $2600, then), it's even more expensive than the $1980 Samsung Galaxy Fold.

"This phone is not only for today for 5G but also for future 5G".

We were expecting to see Oppo's foldable phone this Mobile World Congress (MWC), but it isn't at the show. When closed, the front screen measures 6.6 inches, comparing favorably with large non-folding handsets. The Mate X's dual SIM caters for both 4G and 5G.

I didn't get to touch or hold the Mate X in my hands (nobody did), but 11mm isn't thin for a smartphone.

Dashing hopes of Indian consumers willing to acquire the just-released foldable phone from Huawei any time soon, the company says it is not planning to bring a 4G version of the Mate X shortly and that its availability will depend on the 5G network in the country. The gap-free foldable screen shows Huawei outperforming Samsung in industrial design.

The Mate X's insides are equally as impressive. That's probably mostly due to vanity, but I also like the display here. The foldable device is powered by Huawei's own 7-nanometer Kirin 980 chip and Balong 5,000 5G modem.

On the Mate X, the power button is a fingerprint sensor for unlocking the smartphone.

These new offers mean Samsung fans can get the Galaxy S9 for just £26.75 per month or the Galaxy Note 9 for £36.49 per month - its lowest ever price.

BOE Technology Group and LG Display are some of the other flexible OLED panel makers for smartphones, but their yield rates are said to be far from satisfactory. As a result, its current smartphones - including the excellent Huawei Mate 20 Pro - are not available to buy in the US.
