Two white men wearing ski masks approached Smollett, who is openly gay and plays a gay character on Empire, outside of a Subway, beat him up, called him "that f-got Empire n-", put his head in a noose, and yelled, "This is MAGA country". "Jussie's anger will dissipate and he will forgive these people for what they did", Howard continued.

Comedian Kevin Hart was originally announced as the host of this year's Academy Awards, only to step down after some of his old anti-gay tweets were unearthed.

According to The Blast, who published the photo, it was shared by Empire co-creator Lee Daniels, and depicts Smollett laying in a hospital bed with a cut underneath his right eye. According to the source, the men then poured a substance on him believed to be bleach and one of the attackers put a rope around his neck.

"I wish what happened to my baby was just one big bad joke but it wasn't and we all feel his pain right now".

"This is a hate crime plain and simple and I will not stand by while evil acts are inflicted on any citizen, especially not in my hometown", Rush said in the letter. "But he won't, and we can not, forget their actions". He's the one that does all the Instagrams if he catches you sleeping. We as people have to do better.

"We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice", read the statement. "It starts at home ..."

"We have to love each other regardless of whatever sexual orientation we are because it shows that we are united on a united front".

Meanwhile, the latest reports suggest that investigators have yet to find any video evidence of the alleged attack, searching hundreds of hours of video to no avail. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the actor claimed the men shouted racial and homophobic slurs at him. At some point during the incident, one of the offenders wrapped a rope around the victim's neck. The victim thought the liquid thrown on him was bleach, but detectives have yet to confirm that.
