Blues boss Maurizio Sarri is keen to reunite with the Argentina global, who scoring 37 times in the 2015-16 season for him at Napol.

And the 31-year-old Argentina global wants to join former Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri at the English club which would take over his 36 million euro (US$41 million) buy-out clause.

A swap deal involving former Juve striker Alvaro Morata, the Spaniard who is out of favour at Stamford Bridge, has been mooted.

The Argentina global set a new Serie A goal-scoring record under Sarri at the Stadio San Paolo in the 2015/16 campaign with 36 goals.

"Chelsea don't want to do that as Higuain is 31 years old but as far as the player is concerned, we understand he wants to come to Chelsea and Sarri wants him".

He scored 91 goals during his three years at the club before moving to Juventus in 2016 on a 90 million euro deal.

Higuain's current sporting director has challenged his striker to improve at Milan, with a move to Stamford Bridge looking increasingly unlikely.

The deal could now be finalised "in the coming hours", as Chelsea are willing to pay Higuain's salary, as well as a potential €40million (£36m) transfer fee to make the loan move permanent in the summer.

"A goal can change things, but if he is to continue here, he needs to take on responsibility".

When asked about Chelsea's interest in Higuain, Leonardo said: "There's no point following rumours and gossip". Seeing as he is here, he needs to knuckle down and actually do something for this team.

Higuain, who moved to AC Milan in 2018 on a season-long loan, is reportedly close to completing a transfer to Chelsea.

According to a UK Sun report Blues manager Maurizio Sarri has lost faith with Morata, with Eden Hazard now playing as "False 9" for Chelsea.
