Especially when the deal brought in a six-time All-Star, four-time Silver Slugger, three-time Gold Glove, two-time runner-up for MVP. He's set to make $14.5 million next season before hitting free agency in 2020, when he'll be in line for another lucrative deal stretching into his 30s.

As for Arizona, Weaver is the major piece going back to the desert.

Goldschmidt will be a free agent at the end of the season.

"We've been busy this off-season working to upgrade our lineup, and today we are excited to announce the acquisition of one of the game's premier players in first baseman Paul Goldschmidt", Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said in a statement. This past season, he hit.290/.389/.533 with 33 home runs and 83 RBI in 690 plate appearances while playing above-average defense.

The Cardinals first must acquire Goldschmidt, then convince him over time to stick with the team before we can gauge the merits of their risky pursuit.

Weaver went 7-11 with a 4.95 ERA a year ago with St. Louis, his third with the major league club and joins a pitching staff that combined to post a 3.72 ERA in 2018. Kelly has six years before being eligible for arbitration and Weaver has five.

It's rebuild mode for Arizona.
