Dems lead over GOP in new poll days before midterms

But two years after an election that proved polls and prognosticators wrong, nothing is certain on the eve of the first nationwide elections of the Trump presidency. And Trump is appealing strongly to the conservative mindset of the white people, who are still in majority in the country and don't want their way of life in both economic and social terms to change.

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll on Sunday suggested that while Democrats retain an edge in their battle for the House, Republicans could profit from increasingly positive assessments of the economy and by Trump's harsh focus on border security. There are now 236 Republicans, 193 Democrats and six vacancies. Nearly two-thirds of Republicans (64%) say immigration is extremely important to them, while that dips twenty points to 44% among Democrats.

Speaking to reporters as he left the White House en route to get-out-the-vote rallies in Georgia and Tennessee on Sunday, Trump said Republican enthusiasm is higher than he's ever seen it - but he seemed to hedge in his predictions for the House.

Opinion polls have shown dozens of close US congressional and gubernatorial races for Tuesday's election, Reuters news reported.

Most Americans (56%) think it's likely that a foreign government will interfere with the USA elections this fall, and 74% think that if it happens, it would be a crisis or a major problem.

The Republican Party now controls the chamber with a 43-seat majority, but it is widely expected that the Democrats will gain control in tomorrow's election. "Instead, they have racked up enough indictments to field a football team", he told the crowd Friday in Miami during Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum. "Nobody in my administration got indicted". With political passions at a rare peak, early voting in some states already running far ahead of normal levels.

There are indications that a so-called "blue wave" may help Democrats seize control of at least one chamber of U.S. congress.

Ideally Democrats would win both houses of Congress. More than 60 percent of eligible voters took part in the 2016 vote, when the presidential race was on the ballot.

"I can't speak to the blue, but I can speak to the red", Trump said earlier of Democrats and Republicans. "There is a lot of energy out there".

The party of a first-term president tends to lose congressional seats in his first midterm. But a healthy economy favors the incumbent - and the United States economy has been growing with rare vigor.

He went on to say Democrats would "take a giant wrecking ball to our economy".

Over all, while the conditions for a Democratic takeover have been laid - in one survey of competitive House races, 50 per cent of likely voters support the Democrats, with 46 supporting the Republicans - there are no certainties, especially in the wake of the failure of pollsters to identify the Trump surge that carried the Manhattan billionaire to the White House two years ago.

A nationwide poll released on Sunday by NBC News and The Wall Street Journal details the depth of the demographic shifts.

Another wild card: The campaign's closing days come just a week after a gunman, who allegedly hated immigrants and Jews, killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue, and after a fanatical Trump supporter was arrested in Florida on charges of mailing pipe bombs to prominent Trump opponents, including Obama.
