If the show carries on in this vein, it's going to be one hell of a season. Episode 1's plot description reads, "A mysterious woman who can't even remember her own name, falls from the sky". Jodie Whittaker was convincing as the Doctor from minute one, new showrunner Chris Chibnall has slightly remixed the look and pace of the show, and I absolutely loved Segun Akinola's new score (I'll always have a soft spot for Murray Gold, but he'd gotten a bit same-y).

The Doctor is in, and on her way to toy chests and display shelves.

Doctor Who has been one of the most anticipated new TV shows of the year ever since the BBC revealed that Jodie Whittaker would be taking over the role of the Time Lord and becoming the first female Doctor. It really seems like they've done a great job of creating a show that's accessible to new viewers AND that will be enjoyable for the loyal fans.

The 36-year-old actress from Huddersfield joined the Doctor Who panel on stage at the Hulu Theatre as the show premiered on BBC One last night.

We are thrilled to put together a remarkable moment around the world - for fans and new viewers alike - to celebrate this new era of Doctor Who with Jodie Whittaker. But perhaps more important is how much fun she is having with it. "Because she's THE DOCTOR".

Jodie Whittaker has gone on record already saying that she finds the negative response "ridiculous", as its high time for a woman Doctor. "Whereas there's a slight mythology in the sense if you're a girl, you're a hero for a girl, which is not the case", she said. The Doctor Who Barbie can be purchased for $49.99 from and other outlets.

Chibnall promised that his Doctor Who would get back to basics with stories that weren't aimed exclusively at hardcore fans, and that's evident from the outset of this crisp, fast-moving opener.

"So for me, once I knew I was auditioning and then playing the role, it was much more helpful to immerse myself in the actual literature that was everywhere, and obviously with the internet and things".
