Southgate said: "There are so many dual nationality players".

Southgate's side host Spain at Wembley in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday September 8 and welcome Switzerland to the King Power Stadium for a friendly three days later.

The England manager has kept faith with the majority of the squad who performed well in Russian Federation but has recalled Lallana - who has only played three minutes of first team football for Liverpool this season - after injury wrecked his chances of going to the World Cup.

"I think it's worth us having that debate and getting people around the table to discuss that missing piece".

Shaw has only played once for England since 2015 but has enjoyed a strong start to the club season despite Manchester United's ongoing troubles, while Gomez will be hoping to add to the three caps he has won since making his senior debut previous year.

Vardy and Cahill, part of the group that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup, indicated this week they would be taking a step back from global football.

Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill recently took a step back from selection but it's since been indicated they will be available for future squads if required.

Liverpool's Adam Lallana and Burnley's James Tarkowski, who were on Gareth Southgate's World Cup standby list, also return to the fold.

Southgate said he mostly opted for continuity because "those who were with us in the summer deserve the right to go again".

Southgate said: "We're on the back of a successful tournament". "If they have proven themselves as good as any other young players in the world, that opportunity has to be there".

"I want us to try to capture what we had this summer", said Southgate. I did that myself for a few years.

"But we have to respect his decision and now he dedicates his time to his club and will continue to give his best and hopefully win a trophy". "We are aware of the excitement around other young players but it might be a bit too early for some".

'We had some mature conversations with Young, Vardy and Cahill and we have two injuries.
