This is the only scheduled debate between the two candidates before New York's Democratic primary September 13.

"Cuomo tried as hard as he could to pretend that there wasn't a race happening, but the fact that he's actually attending his first primary debate in more than a decade is proof that (Nixon's) run presents a real challenge", said Joe Dinkin, campaigns director for the Working Families Party, which endorsed Nixon and will have her on its ballot line in November.

Cuomo is the son of the late Mario Cuomo, who was a three-term NY governor and considered a liberal lion.

"Can you stop lying?"

Cuomo touted his work on rebuilding New York City's airports, the new Mario Cuomo bridge, rebuilding New York City's Penn Station, as well as expanding the city's convention center, the Javitz Center.

"As soon as you do", Cuomo said.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, who supports Gov. Cuomo, said that Nixon failed to offer any solutions for suburban voters.

"I will serve four years as governor of the state of New York", Cuomo told the audience, adding that the "only caveat is if God strikes me dead".

A top strategist for NY gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon has accused organizers of an upcoming debate of catering to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's every demand after her request to keep the university hall at 76 degrees went unanswered.

Nixon scoffed at Cuomo's depiction of himself as a fierce opponent of the president, who like the two candidates is a New York City native. "I'm going to fight with him", Cuomo said.

Cuomo has also thumped Nixon in fundraising, with $25 million in his war chest vs. Nixon's roughly $500,000. Nixon is expected to attack Cuomo, blaming him for the deteriorating mass transit system and corruption in the capital, Albany. The victor will face Republican Marc Molinaro and independent Stephanie Miner in November.
