Eyebrows were raised at the news that Cher was cast in the Mamma Mia! sequel as the mother of the character played by Meryl Streep, who is just three years Cher's junior.

"We were kind of protective of the first one because we were very proud of it, it was very good and it became kind of a cult movie ... and we thought what's the point of risking ... taking away from that legacy, so we were reluctant", Ulvaeus told Reuters.

First impression: She recalled of her first day: 'To go into a group that are friends, who were delighted to see each other and talking about old stories. It was great fun, and I love her, so it was ideal. As she didn't want me to see her watching'.

Also expected on the red carpet are returning cast members Christine Baranski, Dominic Cooper, Amanda Seyfried and Stellan Skarsgard as well as newcomers Alexa Davies, Josh Dylan, Jeremy Irvine, Hugh Skinner and Jessica Keenan Wynn.

It's the album we didn't know we needed.until now. Now, with Mamma Mia!

Cher made a typically head-turning arrival to the interview in kooky mom jeans, embroidered with skulls, and a paint-splattered bomber jacket.

Speaking about the album, she teased: "It's not what you think of when you think ABBA, 'cause I did it in a different way".

As well as the usual ABBA classics, Cher performs Fernando with Andy Garcia, and lends her voice to an ensemble rendition of Super Trouper towards the end of the film.

When the film Mamma Mia! came out ten years ago, I was sniffy. Here We Go Again lacks the shock value of the original.
