"There will be items that make you think, items that make you laugh and items that make you scratch your head", the astronaut's son Mark Armstrong said.

"I think the addition that the museum is putting in place will give them a chance to reach out to more kids, and bring them in, and really teach them about science and technology, engineering and math", Armstrong said. "He did save all the items, so he obviously felt they were worth saving".

Neil Armstrong's collection includes a variety of artifacts from his 1969 lunar landing, as well as private mementos.

Armstrong, who lives in suburban Cincinnati, said his father did keep all of his "flown" items together. Mark and his brother Rick, discovered that there were some things for restoration, and some things needed to be researched for proper identification.

Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions, said it handles numerous categories of collectibles that appeal to various collectors, but items connected with space seem to have a universal appeal.
