A Nigerian senator wanted in a murder case was arrested Monday morning in the capital city Abuja while boarding a flight to Morocco.

Melaye was on his way to Morocco on Monday, April 23, 2018, for an official assignment when he was picked up by the Police.

Senator Dino Melaye (APC-Kogi West) has been arrested after checking in at the worldwide wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja.

The confirmation came hours after the senator, who represents Kogi West, announced the arrest on his Twitter handle at 7:32 a.m.

The Senator said that he was blocked as he was undergoing security and immigration screening. And I said it was not true, that the INTERPOL said they had not issue an alert on me.

"We heard they have arrested Senator Dino Melaye because of the truth he has been speaking".

The senator had denied wrongdoing, saying his ordeal was politically-motivated.

Police have yet to make a statement on the arrest.

Our reporter, who visited Melaye's 11 Sangha Street, Maitama, Abuja, residence, witnessed a horde of armed police personnel milling around his house.

"Yes, he had been released nearly an hour ago", he said.
