Shopping Mall Catches Fire in Russian Federation

Vladimir Putin, re-elected last weekend, expressed "deep condolences", the Kremlin said.

Kemerovo is about 800 kilometers (approximately 500 miles) northeast of the Kazakhstan border, around 3,600 kilometers (1,800 miles) east of the Russian capital Moscow.

A spokesperson of Russia's Investigative Committee said 11 people injured in the fire were now being treated in hospital and over 40 have asked for medical help due to the fire, according to a report by Sputnik.

"Serious violations were committed. The fire exits were blocked", Ms Svetlana Petrenko, a spokesman for the committee, said in a statement.

It was unclear if any people were still unaccounted for. "He lost his parents and younger sister in the tragedy", Ms Skvortsov said.

The blaze started on an upper floor of the Winter Cherry complex while numerous victims were in cinema halls.

The death toll rose on Monday morning after 16 more bodies were found in the cinema area. "Then there was a smell of burning and we began to realise that it wasn't a drill".

Another woman told reporters that she was at the movie theater on the fourth floor when someone ran in and screamed for everyone to get out. "This is perhaps farewell".

"My daughters were left to burn due to their bloody rules", Lillevyali told Meduza.

Russia's Investigative Committee has launched a criminal investigation into the case, having reportedly arrested five suspects, including a private security company (PSC) employee who has switched off an alarm system in the mall.

The fire alarm did not work when the fire started on the upper floor of the shopping center.

Videos on social media showed people jumping out of windows of the Winter Cherry mall in Kemerovo city.
