In European elite terms, Sevilla are at a slightly higher level than Huddersfield but it was the same fearful approach that ultimately killed United's ambition in the Champions League, with Mourinho desperately referencing previous seasons to downplay just how poor a defeat it was.

"And Luke every time they (Brighton's players) went in his corridor the cross was coming and the risky situation was coming, so I was not happy with the performance".

The Red Devils playmaker has not been having the best of times expected of him at Old Trafford, and since he had a row with coach Jose Mourinho, the relationship between the pair has dwindled.

Shaw's promising career for club and county took a major setback in 2015 when he suffered a horrific leg break during a match against PSV Eindhoven - an injury which kept the youngster out of action for 305 days.

The Portuguese's man management has always been an issue, but on Saturday he went a step too far by replacing Shaw at half-time against Brighton and then scolding him afterwards.

"There is a difference between the courageous, who want to be there at any cost, and the ones for whom a little pain can make a difference", said Mourinho.

Some may still see the potential in Shaw though if he does become available, and Everton fans have taken to Twitter to urge the club to make a move for the England worldwide, suggesting they would take him a heartbeat.

"They have to work hard every day, they have to play well, so he has to wait".

It was the second time in Jose's career that he had signed the Serbian global, having re-signed him from Benfica in 2014 before becoming an integral player for Mourinho when Chelsea won the title in 2015.

And that is when cracks started to appear - a defiant Mourinho quickly highlighting United's previous European failings in a bid to distance himself from Tuesday's shock exit at Old Trafford, where victories over Chelsea and Liverpool had previously boosted confidence and renewed belief.

The rollercoaster saga between Jose and Luke is set to continue and Cascarino believes the manager was wrong for making his player the scapegoat of the result.

Manchester United will return to action after the worldwide break against Swansea City in the Premier League on Saturday, March 31.

While the Daily Mirror also says that Mourinho's "summer cull" could see ten players leave the club.
