Pikeville City Police Officer Scotty Hamilton and a Kentucky State Police trooper went to a home to follow up on a auto theft on Tuesday night, according to Supporting Heroes.

Scotty Hamilton, a 12-year veteran of the force, was killed about 11:30 p.m. while conducting an investigation along with a Kentucky State Trooper near Hurricane Creek. The officers spoke with the people inside the auto and then assessed the area around a nearby residence for other possible subjects, according to police.

While looking around the area, troopers say Hamilton and Martin were separated.

"No suspect has been located and officers are working diligently to try and obtain information", said KSP spokesman Jody Sims of the Hazard post.

The search continues for the Eastern Kentucky man accused of killing a police officer on Tuesday night.

"They were in an area that had been known for high drug trafficking activity", he said.

Gunshots were fired a short time later within close proximity to the residence.

Officer Scotty Hamilton was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Pike County Coroner's Office. Four people were arrested at the scene on unrelated charges, and the suspected shooter got away.

The suspected gunman, John Russell Hall, is from Pikeville.

Police officers, firefighters and others saluted as a flag-draped casket carrying Hamilton's body was brought into the funeral home.

Hamilton had served with the Pikeville Police Department since 2006.

A candlelight vigil will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, also at the East Kentucky Expo Center.
