Cannizaro was beginning his second season as the Bulldogs coach.

Update, 10 a.m. Tuesday: Andy Cannizaro resigned as Mississippi State head baseball coach, the university announced Tuesday. "I hope Mississippi State University and all of the fans and people affected will one day forgive me". Pitching coach Gary Henderson is reported to be named as Cannizaro's replacement for the remainder of the 2018 season.

Cannizaro's dismissal brought a swift end to his meteoric rise in coaching.

LSU and Mississippi State played five times last season in Cannizaro's only season as Mississippi State's head coach, with LSU winning all five games. It's unfortunate. It's unfortunate for Andy, it's unfortunate for his family, it's unfortunate for Mississippi State, it's unfortunate for college baseball. The school made significant improvements past year under former LSU assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Andy Cannizaro, who was hired as head coach in November 2016. It also played well on the recruiting trail. He joined Mississippi State before last season.

Now, however, Cannizaro's resignation sends shockwaves around the Southeastern Conference.

The Bulldogs opened the season with three consecutive losses to No. 21 Southern Miss after being ranked No. 23 by Baseball America in the preseason. It starts the 2018 coaching carousel in earnest, as the sport's most popular parlor game this spring will be speculating about who Cohen will hire next. Mississippi State officials have not stated on the record why he was relieved of his head coaching duties.

LSU returns to action on Wednesday with a midweek matchup versus in-state rival New Orleans, coached by Blake Dean, himself a protege of Mainieri's after playing with LSU from 2007-10.
