Will Conor McGregor return to boxing or the UFC?

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor may soon find himself without a championship title if he chooses to prolong his absence from the league.

It's looking increasingly likely that Conor McGregor will be a challenger rather than a champion when, or perhaps if, he makes his long-awaited return to the octagon. If he comes back in September, that's nearly two years...that can't happen. It's not fair to everybody else.

"Love Conor, respect Conor, love everything that he's done for this company". The belt would have to move on.

McGregor hasn't fought in the UFC since he knocked out Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight championship at UFC 205 in November 2016.

MMAjunkie's Mike Bohn reported on White's recent comments regarding a meeting between interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and top title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor chose to dip his toe into the boxing world a year ago for a lucrative showdown with former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and has intimated to UFC president Dana White that he intends a comeback in the autumn.

The UFC president said: "You do Khabib versus Tony".

'Conor has said he's thinking about coming back in September, ' White told Fox Sports 1.

White, however, decided that if McGregor still doesn't follow the deadline he has set, the title will be declared vacant and he has already decided the two fighters who will face each other for the belt.

Ferguson, along with much of the MMA community, has always been calling for McGregor to "defend or vacate" but "The Notorious" one seems in no rush to do either.

President Dana White recently chose to take matters into his own hands and remind everyone, including McGregor, that he is still the Boss of the promotion.

Nurmagomedov and Ferguson would be a fascinating battle but the pay-per-view numbers are likely to be far reduced without McGregor's involvement. What would this mean for Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov? Everybody knows that. I say it all the time.
