West Ham's opening bid of £12m is believed to be well short of the Canaries valuation for the promising midfielder.

The 25-year-old Inter Milan midfielder, a Euro 2016 victor with Portugal, underwent a medical with West Ham on Thursday.

Earlier on Thursday David Moyes confirmed Mario was undergoing his medical, he said: 'He is having a medical as we speak.

If the West Ham manager needs to make changes during the 90 minutes he has a bench full of options, including new signing Joao Mario, with Reece Oxford also available.

Owen wrote on Betvictor.com: "I am surprised that League One Wigan are favourites against West Ham who are unbeaten in their last seven games in all competitions".

Joao Mario, who becomes West Ham's first signing of the January window, added: "It's a really historic club with an incredible stadium and unbelievable players".

Wigan trounced Bournemouth 3-0 in their third round replay, and the League One table-toppers will be aiming for their second Premier League scalp, as they host a West Ham United side that could edge past Shrewsbury in extra time in their own replay. It's a really incredible experience to join this fantastic team.

Mario has made 15 appearances for Inter this season, just six coming in the starting XI, and joined the Italian giants from Portuguese side Sporting in 2016. "I also spoke with the coach once and for me, I am really happy to be training for an incredible coach, also".

"My biggest concern is not him as a footballer but getting used to the Premier League, the speed and competitiveness compared to Italy or Portugal", said the Hammers boss.

So I just hope everything goes well and we can play for Portugal.

The club now hold all of the aces and are under no immediate pressure to sell, with the player still having another two and a half years left on a contract set to run until August 2020 but should he wish to leave and considering the limited time remaining in the window, West Ham officials may be handed a hard dilemma.
